Ruben's Story

So how does one really put nearly 20 years in a few sentences and yet make sense? I'm not sure I can but here it goes... I actually joined the Army on 15 August 1989 so my plans after high school were pretty much set prior to entering our senior year. Which is why I never really put a lot of effort to getting good grades or finding out about any colleges, it just seemed like a waste of time for me. Nope, I was going to attend the school of hard-knocks and was ready to learn everything the hard way. (Some things haven't changed). 13 June 1990, I left El Paso for "lovely" Fort Leonard Wood, MO. It was quite an experience I tell you. I arrived there and immediately regretted having done so. If you have never been in Missouri you aren't missing much. It was only relatively hot (85-90 degrees) but the humidity was crazy which caused me to end up in the hospital due to dehydration. Hey, I wasn't used to the humidity. But I did complete my Initial Basic Combat Training on 16 August 1990 which was followed by Advance Individual Training in Fort Lee, VA. This was my first visit to the East Coast but not my last. I graduated from the Army's Quartermaster School and was on my way to Germany after a couple of weeks on leave (vacation) in El Paso. November 90' I landed in Germany and was assigned to the C, Company, 79TH Engineer Battalion Combat Heavy. I was actually very fortunate since I arrive right after all the Soldiers heading to "Operation Desert Storm" had just left and I was left behind in Germany. For the following 2 years I spent it working and traveling throughout Europe which was awesome. I was fortunate enough to visit Paris France, Munich Germany, Amsterdam (not my best trip), and many other cities. During my assignment to Germany, I met who would end up being now my ex-wife. Got married on 29 October 1992 in El Paso but was re-assigned to Fort Carson, CO. I was originally assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3RD Battalion, 68TH Armor, 4TH Infantry Division. Fort Carson is also where I attended the Army's Primary Leadership Development Course (PLDC) and eventually fell in love with being a Soldier. I graduated PLDC in November 1993, yes; I missed my 1ST anniversary which was the first of many "special" dates that I have missed due to work. I was promoted to Corporal upon completion of PLDC and I was on my way up the Noncommissioned Officer ladder. I attained the rank of Sergeant on 1 October 1994, a rank that I would hold for nearly nine years. On 27 June 1995, just 16 days after my 24TH birthday I became a Daddy to a lovely girl whom we name Daphne Caprice. I was just getting used to being a Dad when I had to attend the next level of professional development which is known as the Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course or BNCOC. I attended BNCOC from September 1995 to December 1995 in Fort Lee, VA. By this time I was no longer assigned to my original unit in Fort Carson and was now part of the 49TH Area Support Group. I then attended the Army's Recruiter Course in Fort Jackson, SC which was followed with a move to Liberal, KS, which...Expand for more
turned out to be my worst assignment to date. I arrived in Kansas on Memorial Day weekend 1996 and left on 30 October 1999. After over 9 years of being away from the great state of TEXAS, I was finally home in Fort Hood, Texas! I was originally assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1ST Battalion, 12TH United States Cavalry Regiment, 1ST Cavalry Division. While assigned to this unit I held several leadership roles ranging from Squad Leader to Platoon Sergeant (a position traditionally held by a Sergeant First Class) I was only a Sergeant. Anyway, I got promoted to Staff Sergeant on 1 September 2003, FINALLY! By this time I had made up my mind that I would leave my original career field and join the ranks of the Army Career Counselors. While preparing to go to school to become a Counselor our Division got notified that we would be joining the fight over in Iraq and I was forced to put that dream on hold. I was transferred to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1ST Brigade Combat Team, 1ST Cavalry Division with whom I deployed with in March 2004. I returned home on 28 December 2004 and finally attended the Army Career Course Basic Course graduating in April 2005. On June 2006, after nearly 14 years of marriage I got divorced and my daughter moved to Germany with my ex-wife. That was tough at first but as with everything else I have become accustomed to the weekly phone calls to keep in touch with her and I travel to Germany to see her and she visits the States every other year. 1 November 2006 I found myself once again heading to Iraq for my second tour of duty there. I was supposed to be gone for 12 months but thanks to the "Surge" I ended gone for 15 months. During this deployment I was promoted to Sergeant First Class on 1 June 2007. A rank that I sure didn't expect since I tend to push the envelope every chance I get and have gotten a few folks upset with both my actions and opinions. But at any rate, I know I have earned it so I am extremely proud of it. This promotion was sort of a bitter-sweet event since I got promoted while in Iraq, my daughter wasn't able to be there. You see, my daughter is my inspiration to continue pushing myself but I did call her and she was happy for us so it was okay after all. I returned to the states 19 January 2008 and was very happy to be home again. As you can see, I have been there...done that and got the t-shirts and jerseys to prove it. To tell you that I like being a Soldier is quite an understatement, I love it but at the same time I am nearing the end of my career as a Soldier and am looking forward to it as well. Have I changed since high school? I hope so...although some "Bulldogs" wrote on my year book that I shouldn't change and I should stay the same as a high school kid. Then again, some thought of me as been very conceited too. Life changes you whether we want to or not. I am still like a kid in some ways; it's needed to keep my sanity (what little sanity I have left). Well I hope I succeeded in jotting down my experiences since leaving our beloved Socorro High School behind.
